What’s a Coil Nail Gun?

A coil nail gun uses a cartridge to hold 300-400 nails wound together by wire, while a stick cartridge holds only 20-40 rod-shaped nails. Both types can be used in pneumatic or gas nail guns and for any nail shape or size. The main difference is capacity, with coils holding ten times more nails than sticks.

A coil nail gun is not a specific type of nail gun, because the coil referred to is not part of the nail gun itself, but the cartridge. Nail guns have a cartridge unit that holds the nails for use. The coils contain 300 to 400 nails and the nails are held together by wire. The nails inside can be any shape, the nail gun can be pneumatic or gas, and these nail guns can be ordinary or special. The other type of cartridge is the stick cartridge, which only holds 20 to 40 nails.

Each nail gun has a cartridge unit. Without the cartridge unit to hold the nails, the worker would have to place the nails into the nail gun one at a time. A coil nail gun uses a coil capable of holding several hundred nails, commonly 300 to 400, at once. The nails are wound into a coil and are tied together in the cartridge by thread.

The opposite type of cartridge is the stick cartridge. Unlike the coil nailer, this one has a small capacity of about 20-40 nails. The nails are bound by wire, but the nails are rod-shaped rather than spiral-shaped, which has reduced the efficiency of the space used. Like coil cartridges, stick cartridges can be used for any type of nail gun and include a variety of nail sizes.

Coil nail guns are not limited to one type of nail gun. The two types of motorized nail guns, pneumatic and gas, are both capable of mounting a coil cartridge. Pneumatic nail guns are powered by air via an air compressor and air hose. Gas nail guns have a small gas cartridge and, through the energy of combustion, are able to shoot nails into any surface. Coil nailer can be found with regular nail guns or specialized units made for roofing, boxing, or trim.

Along with the type of nail gun, nail shape and size are not limited in a coil cartridge. It is common to find long and short nail coils. Special nail shapes are also common, and are usually used in specialized nail guns.
Between coil and stick-type nail gun cartridges, there is only one stark difference: capacity. Coils contain about 10 times more nails than sticks. Stick cartridges are sometimes cheaper overall, but the difference in price is usually negligible compared to the convenience of having all the extra nails the coil holds. Convenience aside, both cartridges use nails equally efficiently.
