A compressor pressure switch regulates air compressor operation by starting it when pressure drops below a set point and stopping it when it reaches a maximum value. It is essential for industries heavily reliant on compressed air and can be mounted on the compressor or in an accessible location. The switch consists of a pressure sensor, electrical contacts, and an integrated controller to set pressure levels. It is connected to a reference pressure tube and can be adjusted to meet system needs.

A compressor pressure switch is a pressure sensitive electrical switching device used to regulate the operation of an air compressor. The main function of the switch is to start the compressor when the pressure in its tank drops below a set low point and to stop it when the pressure reaches a set maximum value. This allows the compressor to maintain a constant working charge in the system, an essential criterion for industries that are heavily dependent on compressed air. The compressor pressure switch is typically mounted on the compressor package or other easily accessible location, with the compressor control circuit wired across its internal contacts. A manifold is integrated into the switch which allows the connection of one or more pressure reference air hoses.

Many industries have compressed air systems of various sizes, some of which are heavily dependent on a reliable and constant air supply. This is especially true for facilities that use large numbers of air tools or are involved in spray painting and sandblasting operations. Most of these industries have large compressors that run constantly to maintain an adequate charge in a holding tank. The integrated pipe systems then feed the compressed air to the individual workstations or machines.

One of the problems inherent in this type of installation is the control of the compressor so as to maintain the working charge. This is where the compressor pressure switch comes into play. Consisting of a pressure sensor, a series of electrical contacts and, depending on the device specification, peripheral devices such as unload levers, the switch simply starts and stops the compressor when required. This is achieved by setting minimum and maximum acceptable pressure levels on the switch using an integrated controller. The switch will then start the compressor when the air in the holding tank is depleted at the point where the minimum pressure is reached and stop it again when the maximum pressure is reached.

The compressor pressure switch generally consists of an adjustable membrane sensor connected to a series of electrical contacts. The compressor motor control circuit is then routed through the contacts. A manifold that feeds the diaphragm chamber is connected to a reference pressure tube connected to the holding tank. A pressure regulation control allows to set the two reference pressures according to the needs of the system. The compressor pressure switch can be mounted on the compressor itself or in a location that is easily accessible by relevant personnel.
