What’s a Compressor Pump?

A compressor pump compresses gas for high pressure use, commonly found in air conditioning and refrigeration units. There are various types, including single and two-stage compressors, screw compressors, and superchargers. Single-stage compressors are common in home garages, while two-stage compressors provide high pressure and volume.

A compressor pump is a device used to compress a gas, commonly preparing the gas for use under high pressure. Found on air conditioning (AC) and refrigeration units, one of the most common types of compressor pumps is used on air compressors. Using one of three typical methods of compressing air or gas, the compressor pump is usually rotated via a rubber drive belt, and most units are powered by an electric motor. There are two common types of pump, the single stage version and the two stage version.

When used to compress air, the compressor pump is used to pack the air into a holding tank for later use or for use in a high pressure/high volume application. While a supercharger pump may contain several pistons, the most common type of supercharger uses a single or dual cylinder design. The supercharger works much like a piston engine; piston engine is commonly referred to as a type of air compressor. The most common type of supercharger consists of pistons and piston rings that move up and down in a cylinder via a connecting rod and crankshaft.

The reciprocating or piston compressor is the most commonly used and relies on pistons to pump the gas. Another type of compressor is the screw compressor, which uses a series of interlocking screw-shaped components to trap air and push it towards the tank. Other types of compressors use an eccentric to pump gases and a diaphragm pump uses a solid rod/piston pump sealed in the cylinder by a flexible diaphragm. There are also single and two stage compressors which can be found in most multi cylinder applications while all single cylinder compressors are single stage units.

A single-stage compressor pushes a precise amount of air or gas with each stroke of the piston, turn of the screws or rotation of the eccentric. This type of compressor is the most common found in home garages, appliance and automotive applications. The dual stage compressor pump is used to provide the ultimate in high pressure/high volume compressor utilization. Most common in a two-cylinder design, the two-stage pump uses each piston as an independent pump or stage. The air pumped by the first piston is pumped into the second cylinder, where it is further compressed before being sent to the air tank or reservoir.
