Computer specialists perform complex technology-related tasks in various industries, including software development, data analysis, and technology maintenance. Most positions require full-time employment, but many allow for remote work. Specialists can work as software engineers, systems analysts, or systems designers, depending on their expertise. Some specialists work exclusively in certain industries, such as the airline or government sectors.

Job descriptions for computer specialists can vary, as some work in new software development, others work as data analysts, and still others work in a variety of other capacities, including computer design and technology maintenance. The precise tasks vary depending on the industry a specialist is hired to work in and whether a specialist is working alone or as part of a team. All specialists, however, are hired to perform complex technology-related tasks and need to have knowledge and experience in the latest information technology systems and programs.

In the United States, most positions in this field require full-time employment. Many computer specialist jobs, however, allow employees to work after hours or offsite with an increasing number of specialists working from home. Some specialists also work as independent contractors.

A computer specialist working as a software engineer develops things like computer applications, different types of business and personal software, and computer games. Software engineers also build entire operating systems for business and personal use, as well as systems that allow for network integration and control. Not every computer expert performs all of these tasks, but most can perform these tasks if needed.

Another type of computer specialist, known as a systems analyst, specializes in information technology (IT). These individuals are usually hired by companies to ensure that all technological aspects of a company are operating at optimal levels. An IT informatics specialist can work individually or as part of a team while selecting the type of technology best suited to a company, as well as testing, configuring and monitoring all of the software and hardware needed for the company’s daily operations. This technology includes computers and their operating systems, hardware and software, as well as company-issued cell phone technology.

Companies often hire the services of a computer specialist known as a systems designer to develop custom software, install that software, and help with information recovery when system failures occur. However, this type of specialist is generally used only when an in-house IT specialist or team does not exist. As such, many system designers are independent entrepreneurs juggling multiple contracts with different companies at any one time.

While most specialists are capable of working in a variety of different industries, sometimes a specific type of computer specialist is needed for specific industries. For example, a specialist who specializes in reading computerized flight plans may work exclusively in the airline industry as a computer specialist. Specialists with government security clearances also tend to focus their efforts solely within the government sector.
