What’s a Concrete Pump?

Concrete pumps are useful in construction as they can quickly deliver large volumes of concrete. There are two types: boom pumps, which have a robotic arm, and line pumps, which use hoses. They save time and labor costs and can be used to pour slabs quickly, especially in cold weather.

A concrete pump is an extremely useful item in the construction industry as it can deliver large volumes of concrete in a short amount of time. Concrete trucks could deposit the entire load into the concrete pumping equipment at one time. A hydraulic pump quickly sucks the concrete into the machine to be distributed. There are two main types of pumps used by a concrete pumping service: boom pump and line pump.

The most common type of concrete pump is a boom pump. It is usually mounted on a truck and has a robotic arm controlled by a remote control to precisely eject the concrete into the forms. Boom pumps can be on a truck that has anywhere from two to six axles. The arms are in sections that open up to provide additional length and can have up to six sections. The maximum deployment length can reach up to 200 feet (about 61m).

Line concrete pumps typically consist of separate equipment mounted on a trailer or truck. They work on the same principle as the boom pump, except this concrete pump uses manual labor to distribute materials through long hoses into the mold. Line pumps deliver concrete at a slower rate than boom pumps, so they are commonly used for smaller jobs.

There are several benefits to using a concrete pump on a construction site. When a commercial slab or even a large slab for a home is being poured, a cement truck with its delivery chute can only go as far as the center. A concrete pump can extend the reach up to 20 feet (about 6.1 meters) and allow the form to be filled in between. This can save hours of manual labor raking the concrete in between and in turn save significant labor costs associated with a job. Concrete pumping services also use trucks to disperse concrete on high-rise floors with ease due to the versatility and height that comes with a concrete pump.

Another benefit of using a concrete pumping service is that you can pour a slab quickly so it takes less time to cure. If uncured concrete freezes, it can become unstable and lose its strength. Concrete pumps are used frequently in the cold months during the hottest part of the day to speed up the process so it is smooth and dry before the evening reaches temperatures in the freezing range.
