Draftsmen create detailed drawings of buildings, machinery, and other objects using computer-aided design software. They work with architects, engineers, and designers to create visual representations of objects and provide written information about them. Specializations include civil, aeronautical, electrical, and mechanical design. Training beyond high school is typically required.

A draftsman is an individual who creates detailed drawings of buildings, roads, machinery, and other objects. While traditional drawing was done by hand, most modern drafting professionals rely on software programs to complete these drawings. Drafters use a type of software known as CADD, for drawing and computer animation. CADD software is produced by many different companies and can be slightly different depending on the brand name and application.

The drafter is responsible for creating a visual representation of an object based on details and information provided by the designer or creator of the object. He or she not only illustrates the item but also provides written information about the object shown in the drawing. This information may describe the size or physical characteristics of the object, along with the materials and methods used to install or construct the item.

Architecture drafters are among the most common. These professionals work with architects, engineers, builders and homeowners to design the interior and exterior areas of a building. They create building contours, known as floor plans, as well as real-life views called elevations. Elevations often show details about the building and are much easier for the casual observer to understand.

A civil draftsman designs roads, tunnels and bridges based on blueprints developed by engineers and architects. They may also work directly with municipal or government agencies to help design these types of public works projects. The civil copywriter can also work for independent design firms or as a consultant.

Some writing professionals may specialize in aeronautical design, including aircraft, space shuttles, and satellites. These individuals can find employment with aircraft manufacturing companies as well as government agencies. This type of drawing is quite specialized and may require advanced training in mechanical systems.

Electrical and mechanical designers develop designs for machines, tools, carriages, piping, and wiring systems. They might work for manufacturing companies, research facilities, or even architecture and engineering firms. This type of drawing may also require some specialized training in mechanical and electrical principles.

Most people who want to pursue a career in copywriting will need to have some training beyond their high school level. Few four-year degrees are available in this field, but many schools offer two-year degrees for writers in various disciplines. Many technical schools also offer programs that focus on the field of writing, although these programs may not be as credible as those offered by colleges and universities.
