What’s a Crab Cracker?

A crab cracker is a tool used to crack the hard shells of crabs and other crustaceans without harming the meat inside. It has a selfless design with two mirrored pieces connected by a hinge and is often made from aluminum or stainless steel. Other seafood utensils include forks, picks, and shears.

Similar to a nutcracker in shape and purpose, a crab cracker is used to crack the hard shells of crabs, lobsters, and other edible crustaceans. Crab crackers are also called lobster crackers. These seafood utensils have an easy grip and a wide opening so that when the jaws of the utensil open the shell the tender meat housed inside is not harmed.

Crab cracker is a selflessly designed tool with two mirrored pieces connected by a hinge. The two mirrored pieces have a handle on one end and a handle with ridged grips on the other end to keep the shell in place as you crack it. The zipper joins the two pieces roughly halfway.

While the crab cracker proves to be a particularly innovative design concept, it is a useful device. While it’s primarily used to facilitate easier retrieval of meat from a crustacean’s shell, it also saves the hands of the person using it. Edible seafood shells can often leave hands cut and bleeding. Using a tool like the crab cracker can save you a lot of pain and discomfort.

Made from aluminum or stainless steel, these utensils are often enamelled or coated, making them rust-retardant. There are also those that are made from strong, durable plastic. Both metal ones and plastic crab crackers often have a specially made, easy-grip handle that facilitates a non-slip surface so wet hands don’t lose their grip. The cracker will often have teeth inside the utensil to help grip the claw or legs of the crustacean.

Along with crab crackers, seafood eating utensils include lobster or crab forks, which are small, two-pronged forks used to gently pry the meat out of the shell. Picks or lobsters, small spear-like tools, are used to skewer the tender meat and lift it from the shell. Sea shears or lobster shears are used to cut away the thinnest parts of the shell. Instead of cracking the shell, shears allow for a straighter, more even cut.

Although the Crab Cracker has a simple and basic design premise, many tool suppliers choose to make the tool a little more visually interesting. Some suppliers employ a lobster claw-like design as handles. Many crab crackers are made in the traditional red commonly associated with lobster and seafood meals.
