A dataset is a collection of related data from a single source, often displayed in a table. They provide insight and store information for applications to function properly. There are different types of datasets, including sequential, partitioned, and VSAM, organized by quantity and access frequency.

A dataset is a collection of related data gathered from a single source. The term has several applications, from information gleaned from survey results to sets of scientific research results. In the computer and Internet arena, a dataset is a group of numbers, or bytes, often displayed in a table with columns that classify the data into subsets. There are different types of datasets, including sequential, partitioned, and virtual storage access method (VSAM).

Datasets provide insight into a particular theme or concept. They store information that applications or operating systems need to function properly. Typical systems include macro libraries, source programs, and system parameters or variables. These sets can be cataloged so that they can be referred to with an easily understandable name without reference to the specific storage area.

Even programs for databases of information such as insurance or medical records can use datasets. The program running on the system stores information in datasets. Some of these datasets contain readable text that can be generated in reports. These types of records are often referred to as units and are classified by a single identifier, such as a client or patient name.

Datasets are organized according to their quantity and how often and how they will be accessed. The format of the individual datasets also depends on the intended use of the information. The different types of datasets are distinct, but have a lot in common with each other.

The sequential variety of data sets store information in a sort of consecutive order. This method is most often used for information organized in numerical or alphabetical order. To access an item from a sequential dataset, the system must step through the items that precede it in whatever organizational system it has been programmed for.

Partitioned datasets allow for more direct access to items. This method is used when there is a large amount of information, such as a large database of addresses or customer information. These datasets are also known as libraries. The information is organized somewhat similar to the sequential method, despite the difference in the method of accessing the information.
The virtual storage access method (VSAM) is a key sequence data set (KSDS). These datasets are stored with specific research information attached to each item so they can be accessed more quickly. This system is ideal for datasets that are used unpredictably and with high frequency.
