A decision model is a visual aid used to help individuals or groups make decisions about a problem or situation. There are many different models, and the choice depends on those involved and the problem. After formulating the model and analyzing information, a decision is made and an action plan is implemented. Decision models can be rational or intuitive.

A decision model is a visual aid used to help one or more people consider a problem or situation and come to a decision about how to deal with that situation. There are many different models that can be used, usually consisting of rational or intuitive models, with numerous variations on each of these types. The model used by a person or group depends on those involved in the decision-making and the type of problem being considered. A good decision model can be important for many companies and leaders, although it is not always a perfect way to make decisions.

Sometimes called a decision method or decision-making model, a decision model is usually created on a sheet of paper or other visual medium. Various software programs and applications can be used to assist in creating a decision model, and groups often use large sheets of paper or whiteboards to make these models. There are many different models that can be used, with different visual representations used to assess a problem or make a decision. Choosing the right decision model for a group or person to use can be a rather difficult decision in itself, and some trial and error may be required.

Once a decision model is chosen, different processes can be used to populate that model and arrive at a decision. Ultimately, however, there are typically some common steps involved in using this template. This usually starts with formulating the model and any research required to determine the pertinent information needed to create the model. The analysis of the information in the model follows this, culminating in the formation of a decision based on the evaluation of the information present in the decision model.

Once a decision is made, an action plan can be designed and implemented to effectively enact that decision. Additional evaluation usually follows the implementation of this plan, both to consider the plan itself and the effectiveness of the decision model. Once this is done, future decisions may benefit from using the same model or a new model if the previous one was found to be inappropriate. Decision models are typically rational models, which use logical lists and analysis of information, or intuitive models, which generally rely on the intuition and instincts of those dealing with a problem or decision.
