Default programs are prepackaged software with limited customization options, designed for specific tasks. Examples include office suites and computer problem-solving software. While limited, they are easy to use and meet specific needs.
A default program is any type of software program that is configured to provide specific solutions or fixes for certain types of features. Unlike other types of software, prepackaged software products aren’t designed to allow for much in the way of customization. Typically, the default program is designed to be used in specific ways and to perform specific tasks. Although some small options may be integrated into the program to allow the end user to make some slight changes to the way the software works, these are carefully limited to the adjustments defined in the program itself and cannot be expanded.
There are several types of prepackaged program applications available in the market today. One of the most common examples is software designed to provide a combination of common programs, such as a word processing program, a spreadsheet program, and a presentation creator program. While versatile, this type of package, often known generically as an office suite, the range of features built into the software itself places limits on what end users can do. For example, a default word-processing program usually only allows you to save a document in one of a short list of formats, with no options to add to that short list.
Even databases with limited customization capabilities are often considered examples of off-the-shelf programmed products. A sales database normally comes with a preset range of fields on a template, but it can allow end users to tailor those fields in terms of arranging them on the template, associating values with those fields, and possibly even adding some fields. While somewhat more versatile than a program that doesn’t allow for any customization, these databases still don’t allow for any changes to the program’s code base, and may even have security protocols that prevent end users from accessing and reading that code.
Other software packages of pre-packaged programs are meant more to help deal with computer problems that may crop up from time to time. Here, the focus is on correcting your computer, often by identifying errors in computer programs or detecting the presence of malicious software that undermines the function of one or more programs. As with office suites, the tasks an end user can perform with these programs are often limited to only those allowed by the code written specifically for the application.
While somewhat limited, there are benefits to using a predefined program. Since limits are set, consumers can determine whether a given program’s capabilities will meet their needs. Often, the default program design intentionally makes it easy for end users to activate features with ease. For users who aren’t trained to write software code or make changes to the software, this ease of use is a huge benefit that allows them to focus more on completing tasks and less on designing or adapting the code to create a result desired.
