What’s a Dirty Bomb?

A dirty bomb is an explosive device that spreads radioactive material, causing fear and panic. It is less powerful than a nuclear bomb and poses minimal radiation risk. Governments monitor radioactive material to prevent it from falling into the wrong hands. If exposed, shower and seek medical attention.

A dirty bomb is an explosive device used to spread radioactive material. Because people tend to fear radiation, thanks to a widespread cultural understanding of the effects of radiation exposure, a dirty bomb could cause widespread fear and panic as well as generate a big mess to clean up. For this reason, some governments believe that dirty bombs could potentially be used by terrorist organizations as a tool to destroy a company and/or government.

It is extremely important to differentiate a dirty bomb from an atomic bomb. While dirty bombs contain nuclear material, they are in no way as powerful or devastating as a nuclear bomb. Indeed, the explosives in a dirty bomb would be much more dangerous than the radioactive material, with most scenarios attributing the majority of casualties to people in the immediate vicinity of the blast, rather than radiation damage. While a dirty bomb is certainly nothing to be treated lightly, the threat from a nuclear bomb is far more serious.

The effect of a dirty bomb varies depending on how it is constructed, the type of materials involved, and the conditions prevailing on the day the device is detonated. For example, strong winds could carry the radioactive materials in the bomb across a large area, creating more or a mess to clean up. Or, a large quantity of explosives could be used, creating chaos at the detonation site while ensuring wide dispersion.

In their studies of dirty bombs, most governments have understood that the risk of radiation damage from a dirty bomb is actually quite minimal. However, the detonation of such a device could be a powerful tool to create fear in the population, as many people have a deep fear of radiation. The fear and panic created by a dirty bomb could wreak havoc, along with calls for an intensive site cleanup, which could be extremely costly.

Dirty bombs are a form of radiological dispersal device (RDD). Concern over such devices has led most governments to tightly monitor radioactive material, with the aim of ensuring it does not fall into the wrong hands. However, a fair amount of technical know-how is required to construct a dirty bomb, and as a result these devices pose a much lesser threat than improvised explosive devices (IEDs), suicide bombs and other cruder forms of terrorism that they are easy to plan, build and execute.

If you are exposed to a dirty bomb, you should shower, discard any clothing you were wearing at the time of the explosion, and seek medical attention. In the event that a dirty bomb explodes in a major urban area, such medical assistance will likely be readily available, as disaster response teams will no doubt descend on the site en masse.
