A docudrama combines documentary and drama, presenting real events and people in a dramatized way. It aims to provide background information without offering opinions, using techniques to bring events to life. It can include footage with actors and even hypothetical situations. Docudramas can make historical events more accessible and stimulate discussion, but some criticize their use of literary license. It’s important to remember that there can be other interpretations and that directors may omit facts.

A docudrama is a film or television show that combines the fields of documentary and drama. A docudrama could be defined as a non-fiction drama, with a focus on real events and real people presented in a dramatized way. In addition to being filmed, a docudrama can also be written; in written form, the docudrama began to emerge in the second half of the 20th century in the world of characters such as Truman Capote and Norman Mailer, followed by the cinema.

Several characteristics define a docudrama. The first is the tendency to stick to the facts as they are known, offering no comment. The goal is to provide people with background information, enabling them to draw their own conclusions. Most documentaries, on the other hand, include narrative and positional stances that are designed to influence viewers and readers. Docudramas also use techniques to bring the events discussed to life; instead of saying that person X and person Y had a conversation, for example, a docudrama will stage a recreation of the conversation.

Unlike a real documentary, a docudrama can include footage with actors. Depending on the topic, little or no documentary material may be used. In some cases, docudramas can even create entirely staged hypothetical situations, as was the case with the 2006 film Death of a President. Some organizations use documentaries to draw attention to current events and issues, with several environmental filmmakers making documentaries on the effects of global warming, for example, illustrating what could happen if sea levels rise dramatically.

The use of “drama” in the term “docudrama” can be confusing, because drama is usually associated with fiction. Docudramas do not integrate elements of fiction, however, remaining as faithful as possible to the events they document. Docudramas can make historical events, from the Roman Empire to the present day, more accessible, and many of them stimulate discussion and debate by not offering opinions, forcing viewers and readers to discuss the content with each other.

You may also listen to docudramas called drama documentaries or dramatized documentaries. Some people criticize the docudrama field, arguing that the literary license used to reconstruct scenes and bring events to life can be somewhat misleading, especially to people who are not adept at distinguishing fact from fiction. Even if well researched, a docudrama is just a presentation of events, and it’s important to remember that there can be other interpretations and that many directors are guilty of sins of omission, leading people to the wrong conclusions by not giving them all the facts.
