A double square is a measuring tool used in woodworking and precision machining to maintain measured patterns. It consists of a rule and a blade, with the blade being the moving part that can be adjusted for proper measurement. The tool can be made from different materials and may have accessories like spirit levels or magnetic strips.

Primarily used in woodworking and woodworking settings whenever a measured pattern needs to be maintained, a double square is a measuring tool used to measure square angles in multiples of two. This is made possible by the part of the tool that allows the movement of one of the two main parts of the double square: the sliding blade. These tools are aimed at machinists who specialize in precision parts, as well as woodworkers for use on smaller projects. Any person who specializes in pattern making, no doubt, uses a double square to do this.

The two main components of the tool are referred to as the rule and the blade. The rule is generally a tempered ruler, made of a strong metal and most commonly 12 cm (30.48 inches) long with a groove or rail running along it. The ridge, rail or groove depends on the manufacturer’s preference, but in all cases it must be perfectly parallel to the long edges of the straight edge. It is also responsible for acting as a guide whenever the blade needs to be adjusted or moved along the length of the ruler for proper measurement.

The blade is the moving part in a double square and is most commonly manufactured with a mechanism to secure the blade against the rule. This fastener is typically a hook or notch which usually coincides with the placement of the groove or guide on the straightedge. The ruler drives the blade straight against itself, and when the correct measurement on the ruler is achieved, the blade is fixed in place, usually by a screw or clamping device. The blade is usually made from hardened steel, which while heavy also offers stability and durability, necessary aspects of a precision tool.

Double squares can be made from different materials: aluminum, steel, titanium, or different alloys that can be used to produce a square that will last and take the abuse that can occur in a shop environment. Some are fairly simple mechanisms, while others boast a couple of accessories, depending on the application where the tool will typically be used. Spirit levels are popular add-ons to the tool’s blade, as are magnetic strips that help attach the double square to certain materials you’re working with.
