What’s a drive pulley?

[ad_1]

A drive pulley moves a conveyor belt, and is a type of pulley that can have belts, chains, cables, or ropes. It is one of six simple machines that can change the direction of applied force and multiply force. Drive pulleys are used in two types of belt conveyors: those that move material and those that move bulk material. The belts are usually made of rubber and have two or more layers.

A drive pulley is a pulley that drives or moves a conveyor belt. A good example of a drive pulley is the belt and drive pulley that transforms the rotating brushes into an upright vacuum cleaner. In vacuum cleaners, the drive pulley consists of a drum made up of a wheel and an axle. Pulleys can have belts, chains, cables or ropes that run on a wheel, which sometimes has a groove to accommodate them.

A pulley is one of six simple machines, along with an inclined plane, lever, wheel and axle, wedge and screw. Mechanically speaking, a pulley will change the direction of the applied force and transmit this rolling motion to something else. A pulley system can also multiply force.

A drive pulley, specifically, is a drive wheel and axle that moves a conveyor belt. Also called conveyor belts, a conveyor belt is a ring of material that runs between two or more pulleys: drive and idler pulleys. The purpose of conveyor belts is to move objects along the belt to another location.

In the belt conveyor system, a drive pulley has power applied and a tensioner is a pulley that has no power. The drive pulleys will cause the belt to move towards them, while the idler pulley simply turns and allows the belt to move. Power can be derived from an engine or it can be provided by hand. The larger the materials or goods being moved by the conveyor built on the powered pulley, the stronger the motor or other power source driving the drive pulley.

There are two types of belt conveyors that use drive pulleys. These include belts that move material, such as moving products or boxes in a factory, and those that move bulk material, such as coal or grain. Material conveyor belts are usually found indoors, such as in a grocery store to move items along for purchase at the checkout. Conveyor belts for bulk materials are usually located outdoors.

Belts driven by drive pulleys typically have two or more layers and are usually made of rubber. The inner layer is the strong layer, called the carcass, which sits next to the pulley, and the outer layer is called the cover. For strength, the carcass is usually made of cotton or plastic mesh, and the cover is made of rubber or plastic.
