What’s a DSL modem?

DSL modems connect PCs to the internet via high-speed DSL connections, providing faster access than dial-up. They can use USB or Ethernet ports, but Ethernet is recommended for better connection. DSL modems can be used with single computers or networks, and can be purchased from electronics stores or provided by DSL service providers. Low pass filters prevent data signals from interfering with phone calls. Some companies offer free modems with a contract, while others sell or rent them directly.

A DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) modem is a type of modem used to connect a personal computer (PC) to the Internet. DSL modems can provide fast access to the Internet, as they are designed for use with high-speed DSL connections. DSL connections are considered to be much faster than dial-up Internet connections. In addition to increased speed, DSL service allows the user to talk on the phone and access the Internet at the same time.

A DSL modem, also called an asymmetric DSL modem (ADSL), provides similar service, except for speed, to that provided by a dial-up modem. However, there are some important differences in the configuration and technological makeup of DSL modems. For example, dial-up modems are often, though not always, installed inside computer terminals. In contrast, a DSL modem is usually external and connects to a computer via a USB or Ethernet port.

There are DSL modems that use either a USB or an Ethernet port, as well as those designed for use with both. Although a DSL modem can work with a Universal Serial Bus (USB) port, most experts recommend using an Ethernet port. The connection is said to be noticeably better when using an Ethernet port.

A DSL Ethernet modem can be employed whether the user has a single computer or a network of PCs. You can use a router to allow multiple computers to use the same internet connection. The router you use must be capable of Network Address Translation (NAT). Conversely, USB modems are only recommended for use with single computers. Usually, a modem connected through a USB port cannot support a router.
DSL modems can be purchased from many electronics, computer and department stores. They are also available online from a variety of companies, as well as private sellers. They often come with the necessary cables, power supply, and filters in one package. The filters included with a DSL modem are called low pass filters. They are used to prevent data signals from causing interference to normal telephone calls.
Often companies that provide DSL services offer DSL modems to their customers for free. Often, as a condition of receiving a free DSL modem, a customer must sign a contract agreeing to pay for the company’s Internet service for a specified amount of time. In other cases, the DSL modem is purchased directly from the service provider. Some companies offer modems for rent.
