What’s a Duct Pipe?

Conduit pipes transport gases, liquids or solids in buildings. They come in various materials and sizes for different applications, including residential HVAC, dryer vents, range hoods, and industrial use. Fans are often used to move air, and specialized duct work is required for hazardous or corrosive materials. Rigid spiral duct is popular for large building HVAC.

Conduit pipe is a means of transporting gases, liquids or solids such as flour in an oven or sawdust in a workshop from one point to another in a residence, office or industrial building. The tubing is available in a wide variety of materials and sizes, depending on the desired application. The materials used in the construction of the ducts range from chlorinated polyvinyl chloride (CPVC) to rigid galvanized metal and reinforced flexible plastic pipes. Duct sizes range from 2 inches (about 5 cm) or less up to 48 inches (about 122 cm) or more.

Residential uses for duct pipe include heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC), dryer exhaust vents, vents for range hoods and gas fireplaces, and more. Typically, residential HVAC duct is flexible, insulated duct that moves air from an air conditioning unit to rigid metal log boots with an adjustable vent plate that regulates airflow into a room . In residences where a furnace is used for heat, the duct pipe is typically rigid metal from the furnace to the room register or vent plate.

Other residential applications require HVAC ducts of different sizes and materials, which could be 16 inches in diameter or more. The dryer duct pipe that connects a dryer to a rigid vent might be plastic tubing 4 inches (about 10 cm) in diameter. Rigid metal ducting is often used to vent range hoods and gas fireplaces outside, while a residential shop may use flexible plastic pipe to collect the sawdust. Where very hot gas from a fireplace or gas furnace passes through a ceiling, a multi-chamber insulated section of pipe is installed to prevent fire.

In residential air ducts, fans are often installed to push the air from one location to another. In HVAC applications, a fan moves the air inside the house, while exhaust fans move unwanted or dangerous fumes from the house to the outside. Bathroom fans remove moist air from your home to help prevent damp and mold. Duct supplies for repair or remodeling projects are readily available at building supply or hardware stores.

In industrial applications, more specialized duct work is often required. CPVC is often employed when a very hot liquid is being moved and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) can be used as a conduit for hazardous or corrosive liquids. These products come in a variety of sizes and are inexpensive and relatively easy to install.

For large building HVAC, rigid spiral duct is popular with builders and architects. Coiled tubing is so named for a spiral rod wound and welded along the entire length of the tubing. The heavier coiled tubing adds strength to the coiled duct tubing and allows for a lighter gauge metal to be used in the tubing body, thus saving weight and material.
