What’s a Ductile Iron Flange?

Ductile iron flanges are used for above ground piping of water and other liquids. They are not as brittle as gray cast iron and must be properly aligned. Ductile iron flanges come in various designs and are commonly used for high pressure water lines and carrying other high pressure liquids and gases. They require a special gasket to seal the connection and should not be bent or clamped unevenly.

A ductile iron flange is a flange made from ductile iron and designed to be used as above ground piping for water and other liquids. The ductile cast iron flange is not as brittle as common gray cast iron and must not be bent or clamped unevenly, otherwise damage and even breakage may occur. The flange on a straight run of ductile pipe is often threaded and machine tightened to make sure the flange is properly aligned. After being assembled, the ductile iron flange is commonly machined flat to ensure that the pipe ends are perpendicular to each other.

Not intended for underground use, the ductile iron flange is a piece of ductile or nodular iron. Ductile cast iron has more graphite and magnesium than lesser cast iron blend. Ductile cast iron can bend and is slightly more elastic than gray cast iron. A ductile iron flange is designed to be used above ground and is commonly lined when intended to be used for a water main. Ductile iron is stronger than aluminum, but not as strong as a forged flange.

There are several different types of ductile iron flanges, with each design offering a unique look in your plumbing fixture. From crosses, angles and tees to flanges of varying degrees of rotation and even y-flanges, ductile iron flanges can be manufactured to complement nearly any piping installation. The pipe and flanges used to transport water are known as coated ductile iron pipes and fittings. The iron is lined with a mixture of sand and cement to allow the flow through the pipe to be less turbulent and to allow the pipe to carry more water over a distance than comparable unlined pipe. This is due to the lack of turbulence in the pipe, flanges and various connections.

Ductile iron flanges and pipes are typically used for high pressure water lines and for carrying other high pressure liquids and gases, such as steam. When ductile iron pipe is allowed to flex, it can crack and even crack. For this reason the ductile iron pipe is always firmly anchored to a structure by means of straps or similar objects. Flanges also require a special gasket to seal the connection. Using a rubber gasket will almost always result in premature failure and may even damage the flange.
