A duvet day is a type of employment benefit that allows employees to take a day off without prior notice or justification. It is often included in employee contracts and is considered part of the overall benefits package. It is recommended to use these days judiciously and space them out.

A duvet day is a type of employment benefit that allows employees to take a day off without paying the notice normally required to request leave. In many cases, the extension of a limited number of quilt days per calendar year is documented in the employee’s contract, and the benefit is considered part of the overall benefits package offered to the employee. Somewhat common in the UK and US, Quilt Day is often different from a Personal Day as Personal Days may or may not be awarded for payment.

A duvet day is just one of several types of paid days that employees can claim, based on the terms of their employment. Sick leave is usually a paid benefit, allowing employees to take time off when they are sick or in need of some type of procedure that will require hospitalization and a recovery period before returning to work. Employees also often accumulate vacation days set aside specifically for use when the employee wants to take a trip or otherwise has extended time off work for recreational purposes. Unlike sick days which may require some form of documentation to claim or vacation days which need to be scheduled in advance, typically a duvet day can be taken at the employee’s discretion, without prior notice to the employer or the need to justify the reasons to take the day off.

It is not uncommon for employers to include per diem Duvet benefits as part of employee benefit packages extended to executives and other corporate directors. In some cases, top-level managers can also extend this type of benefit. As long as there are no labor laws that prevent the issuance of this type of benefit, companies are free to provide Quilt Day benefits to any employee they wish, as long as all employees of the same level or category have access to the benefit.

While taking a duvet day is often a great way to rest after a tough period at work or after a business trip, it’s usually wise to make judicious use of those days. The intended purpose is to allow the employee the opportunity to have a day off from time to time to rest from the cares of the workplace and come back refreshed and ready to take on his responsibilities once more. As there is usually a limit to how many days can be taken during the course of the calendar year, it is recommended to space them out and choose to use them on days that will not create undue hardship for co-workers.
