What’s a fat separator?

[ad_1]

A fat separator is a kitchen tool used to remove liquid fat from meat juices during cooking, making them healthier and more useful in gravies and sauces. Various devices can be used, including spoons and jugs, and they are inexpensive and widely available.

Sometimes referred to as a fat skimmer, the purpose of the fat separator is to allow liquid fat to be removed from the juices emitted from the meat during the cooking process. This allows the juices to be used more effectively in gravies and sauces. It’s also a great way to reduce the fat content of a number of different foods, making them healthier for consumption.

In fact, there are several devices that can rightfully be called fat separators. For example, if your job is to remove bubbled-out fat on the outside of a roast, you can use a bulter to remove collected fat from the juices. There are some larger cooking spoons that can also be used to skim the top where the liquid fat is floating and remove it from the prepared dish. Fat skimming is easily achieved with a flat spoon. Using a spoon to separate fat is common when skimming fat layers from the top of soups and stews. Essentially, any kitchen device used to remove liquefied fat from food being prepared qualifies as a form of fat separator.

However, there is one kitchen utensil that is actually referred to as a fat separator. This device resembles a small pitcher and is usually made of a transparent material, such as clear or heat-resistant plastic, with a spout attached to the bottom of the pitcher. Using this jug-style separator requires the meat drippings to be poured into the jug. From there, the fats will rise to the surface of the drippings. Collecting fat at the surface allows drippings to pour out of the spout, while the fat remains in the jug. Separating the grease from the drippings using this type of separator is quick, easy, and potentially less messy than many other methods.

Grease separators are not expensive and can often be found in the kitchen sections of any discount retail store. Kitchen stores will also carry different types of grease skimmers, some of them specialized and some for more general use. Typically, this tool doesn’t cost much and will last for a number of years.
