Feeler gauges measure the gap between two objects and are used in manufacturing and automotive industries. They come in English and metric sizes, and are purchased as sets or individually. Different types include flat, wire, and ramp gauges, made from materials like carbon steel, stainless steel, brass, or plastic. To measure the gap, a caliper is used to find the closest thickness gauge.

A feeler gauge is a tool that is used to measure the distance or gap between two objects. Feeler gauges are widely used in a variety of industries, to configure manufacturing equipment to ensure effective performance. They are also commonly employed for automotive engine components that require precise spacing to function properly.

Feeler gauges are available in a variety of English and metric sizes. A feeler gauge is usually purchased as part of a set that contains a series of individual gauges with progressively increasing thicknesses. Gauges can also be purchased individually and can be made in customized shapes and sizes.

To measure the gap between two objects, a caliper with a thickness close to the gap distance is first used. If this gauge is too large to fit, the gauge with the next, smaller thickness is used. If the gauge has too much play, try the probe with the next larger thickness. This process is repeated until a caliber that fits snugly into the blank is identified. The thickness of this gauge therefore represents the distance of the gap.

A flat feeler gauge, or blade, is typically half an inch (1.27 cm) wide and several inches (or centimeters) long. A set usually includes a holder that holds a number of blades with different thicknesses. The blades fan out from the holder to allow the user to select the preferred blade thickness, then fold the unused gauges back into the holder. Each blade is stamped with its thickness for easy identification. A flat feeler gauge is usually flexible and can be bent for use in hard-to-reach places.

A wire feeler gauge typically consists of a holder that holds a series of round wires of varying thicknesses. The wires are usually bent into a “U” shape, rigidly attached to the backing, and are less flexible than flat feeler gauges. Wire feeler gauges are often used in automotive applications for measuring spark plug electrode gaps and other critical ignition gaps, such as valves.

A ramp or graduated feeler gauge increases in thickness along its length. There are markings identifying the thickness at multiple points along the gauge. It is placed in the space to be measured, until it has zero clearance. The thickness of the gauge at this location represents the gap distance.
Feeler gauges are most commonly made from high quality carbon steel and are machined to a very smooth surface finish. Other blade materials are available, including stainless steel, brass, and plastic. Metal blades have better wear resistance and will retain their sharpness after many uses.
