The Physical Fitness Badge is awarded to US Army members who score above 90 on each section of the Physical Fitness Test, consisting of push-ups, sit-ups, and a 2-mile run. The badge features a human figure and the US emblem, and can only be worn on the physical training uniform. Requirements vary by age and gender.
The Physical Fitness Badge is a cloth embroidered award given to members of the US Army who receive high and qualifying scores on the Physical Fitness Test. This test is classified into three sections consisting of an applicant performing push-ups, sit-ups, and a two-mile (3.2-kilometer) run. Individuals who score above 90 on each section of the test can receive this badge and wear it on their uniforms during physical training exercises.
The badge is circular in shape, contains a badge in the center and is surrounded by a medium blue and dark blue band. The central insignia features the golden shape of a human figure with arms outstretched above an emblem of the United States. The emblem features thirteen red and white stripes and six white stars on a blue background, representative of the original stars and stripes flag adopted by the American colonies at the founding of the country. In dark blue, the words “Physical Physical Excellence” are stitched around the badge.
The physical fitness badge can only be worn on the physical training uniform. This uniform consists of a regulation T-shirt or sweatshirt with the Army logo, in combination with regulation shorts or jogging pants. The insignia must be worn on the left side of the body and centered on the chest.
Soldiers in the military must take a physical fitness test to graduate from basic training and twice a year to remain enlisted. The test consists of three parts that measure a soldier’s ability to do push-ups, sit-ups and a 2-mile (3.2-kilometer) timed run. Each section of the test is worth 100 points toward the soldier’s overall score. The recruit must receive a score of 50 or higher on each portion to graduate from basic training. He must score a 60 or higher in each area to remain enlisted, and the score must be 90 or better to qualify for the Fitness Badge.
Requirements regarding pushups, squats, and running speeds are based on a soldier’s age and gender. Charts are available from the US Army detailing how many repetitions an applicant must perform in one minute, and how fast two miles must be run to earn certain scores. For example, a 21-year-old man who wants to qualify for the Physical Fitness Badge must perform a minimum of 64 push-ups, 72 sit-ups in one minute, and run two miles in 13 minutes and 42 seconds. A woman pursuing this age-matched award must complete a minimum of 36 push-ups, 72 sit-ups and run two miles in 16 minutes and 24 seconds.
