A fitness manager oversees the day-to-day operations of a fitness center, including hiring and training staff, marketing the facility, ensuring customer satisfaction, and maintaining equipment. They may also teach classes and offer personalized services.

A fitness manager is responsible for the health and exercise programs at a fitness center or health facility. In some locations, the fitness manager also has the same duties as a general manager or supervisor. This individual’s primary responsibilities are to take care of day-to-day operations and supervise employees. Most people in this position usually have backgrounds in physical education, sports management, or business administration.

One of the duties of a fitness manager is to hire and train staff for the gym. The manager is usually responsible for listing vacancies and interviewing potential employees. After hiring the worker, this professional would also help the employee with paperwork regarding taxes and benefits. People working in this role often help employees with schedules and can fire employees if necessary. Other times, this individual may need to resolve disputes between employees.

Many fitness centers rely heavily on the fitness manager to market the facility and gain new clients. At times, this employee may need to create or provide input on marketing materials for flyers and brochures. The manager can come up with ideas for discounts and promotions during the month and track the data to see if the process generated additional revenue.

Customer service is also a crucial part of what a fitness manager does every day. This individual will usually greet people when they come in or they can walk around and see if customers need anything. It is up to this person to ensure that customers are satisfied with their experience at the facility and that they return. Typically, managers are also responsible for helping customers with billing issues, following up on customer complaints, and listening to suggestions for the center. Many managers answer questions about classes and provide information about optional services at the gym.

Another task a fitness manager has is to ensure that the facility’s machines and other equipment are available and in good working order. This person can see that the training machines are cleaned every day and the weights are put back in their proper place. As some facilities allow large groups to hold meetings at the center, the manager may also be in charge of setting up rooms and taking deposits.

Most managers usually have experience in other areas of physical fitness and can teach a class or two. This team member may host multiple cardio classes or even teach swimming at facilities with pools. Other managers may offer personalized services such as personal training or nutrition.
