A more capable mechanic is a person who creates parts for machines and, in many cases, builds the machine itself. A secondary education is usually required, and post-secondary education may also be required in the form of a professional certificate or a diploma.

Sometimes a degree isn’t necessary; instead, a person interested in becoming a fit mechanic can apply for an apprenticeship with a local union or private company. This apprenticeship can last from one to five years, during which time the new installer mechanic will learn all the skills necessary to do the job right. He will work under the guidance and supervision of a more experienced mechanic and during the apprenticeship period the apprentice will receive all relevant certifications or permits. Certain types of courses can also be included in the learning period; computer numerical control (CNC) programs are often used in machining; therefore, the apprentice will need to learn to use CNC programs as well as computer-aided design (CAD) programs in some industries.

Mathematical skills are required to become an apt mechanic because the parts being manufactured must be built to very strict specifications. Math skills will help the mechanic perform calculations and make adjustments to computer programs as needed. Once the parts are created, the mechanic may need to build the machine to ensure it works properly. Adjustments can be made to the design if certain parts do not work correctly; the installing mechanic is likely to work with an equipment designer at this stage, as the mechanic may not be directly responsible for the design of a machine.

Machines used to create parts will need to be assembled and maintained. The assembler’s machinists will usually be responsible for this installation and maintenance, and in many cases, deep repairs to the machines can be carried out by the assembler’s machinists. Specific maintenance personnel may be available to perform repairs and maintenance at larger companies, although machinists are often trained or specialized in machine repair. Troubleshooting and identification of possible problems with the machine will be carried out by technicians.
