What’s a Floor Conveyor?

Floor conveyors transport objects at ground level in manufacturing and industrial facilities. They come in different designs, including manual, mechanized belt, trolley-on-rail, and towline. They are used for large, heavy, or bulky materials and parts that do not fit easily on a standard belt.

A floor conveyor is a mechanical system used to transport objects around a building. Unlike traditional belt conveyors, which are positioned above or at waist level, floor conveyors are positioned at floor level. They can be recessed into the floor, with the control hidden underground, or simply placed on the floor. These units are found in many types of manufacturing and industrial facilities, where they are used to transport goods during assembly or as part of the warehousing and shipping process.

Companies can choose from different floor conveyor designs based on the application. The most basic and least expensive is the manual conveyor, which consists of a metal or rubber belt placed on a set of rollers. Workers can place items on this floor-level belt, then manually push it along the length of the conveyor, where it is removed and transported for shipping or further processing. Some models of floor conveyors feature a mechanized belt like those found along a traditional assembly line. These straps simply move items across the floor from one location to another without the need for manual force.

More advanced floor conveyor models may feature a trolley-on-rail design. This type of system features trolleys or wheeled buckets that roll along a floor-mounted track. These rails can be built into the floor like a dolly or attached to the floor surface like a rail. Cart-on-track designs work best for companies that only need to move products along a fixed route.

When businesses need the flexibility to move items off a fixed path, they can choose a towline floor conveyor. These systems feature a towline built into the ground, which can be attached to wheeled devices such as carts or trucks. The floor conveyor moves the trolleys a certain distance and operators can then remove them from the haul line and move them anywhere within the factory.

Typically, a floor conveyor is used in applications where there is no need to keep items at an easily accessible height. For example, standard carrying systems move items to approximately waist height, which makes it easy to access these items by hand. Floor conveyors are not designed for this purpose and are instead used to move very large, heavy or bulky materials that do not fit easily on a standard belt. These floor conveyors can also be used to support large parts that naturally provide access, such as a car door mounted on a floor conveyor that needs minor work done only along the top.
