The fo’c’sle is the front and upper deck of a ship used for combat, crew residence, and equipment storage. It also serves as an observation area and houses the anchor windlass. The design and features of the fo’c’sle have changed throughout history to increase ship efficiency. The ship is divided into different parts for crew and marine residence.

A fo’c’sle is the forward and most prominent part of a ship, which may be used for combat or for accommodation for sailors. In fact, it is the front or upper deck of a ship. It was named keeping in mind its defensive, as well as offensive, purposes in wars, where ships were built with high decks and huge so-called shells. It is also used as an observation area to check navigation movements and observe any threats. Ship’s equipment and machinery such as ropes, sails and other equipment can be stored on the fo’c’sle, out of the way until needed.

In addition to its combat and storage purposes, it is primarily used as a crew or social area, where different crew members perform their duties and other related work. The anchor windlass, used to wrap the ship’s anchors, is also located at the front of the castle. There could be a large storage of weapons and combat equipment that can be easily and quickly reached if necessary, when the enemies have closed in. It is therefore the most integral part of the ship, serving a number of different purposes, including crew residence, storage of ship’s equipment, and armaments.

Approximately 7 percent of the ship’s length is taken up by the forecastle. The side plates have a variable thickness and width depending on the ships design and other parameters. These plates are a bit heavier than the other plates. It requires even more rigidity if the length of the castle is 50 percent of the total length of the ship.

The design of the castle and its features are constantly changing. In order to increase the efficiency of the ship, the length and size of it have changed throughout history, taking into account the requirements of the crew area and equipment storage. After a while, the fantail was introduced as the highest or forward end of the ship, from mast to stem.

A ship is divided into different parts, taking into account the responsibility of each compartment and the service needs. The supported crew would lie down in this area, along with the other sailors. This supportive crew usually answers to the boatswain or bosun. On the other hand, the marines or ship guardians, who are there to protect the ship against any invasion by an enemy, reside in a separate section. In the past, there was a rule that said that the separation between sailors and marines was necessary and that’s why they had different sleeping compartments.
