Bobby pins, also known as kirby grips or pins, are double-pronged hairpins used to hold hair in place. They are available in various colors and sizes and can be decorated. They are cheap and sold in packages at supermarkets, pharmacies, and dollar stores.

A bobby pin is a double-pronged bobby pin that slides into split-ended hair, then the flexible tips close over the hair to hold it in place. A fork is sometimes called a kirby grip or pin. Pins became popular in the 1920s to hold up the new highlighted hairstyles.

Today many women still use the bobby pins for all sorts of hairstyles including buns, updos, and twists. Longer versions of the hairpin are generally for larger sections of hair. The bobby pins are flat and can be inserted into a hairstyle from all angles to support the style and hold the hair. What’s really unique about bobby pins is their ability to look almost invisible in many hairstyles. The hairpin is available in black, brown, bronze, blonde, and gray to match all hair colors.

Like barrettes, decorated bobby pins are sometimes noticeable in the hair. A decorated hair clip can have beads or other details and is often used to pull back the front sections of hair while looking more decorative than a simple hair clip. It’s a good idea to always keep a few simple or decorative bobby pins in your bag, along with a hair elastic, in case you need a quick hairstyle on the go.

Pins are very cheap and usually don’t last very long, as once the ends of the wires are spread too far apart, they loosen the hair too much to hold it in place. A hairpin is made of wire and has a loop at one end and two prongs at the other. There is a bumpy ridge at the top of the hairpin at its center and the ridge helps prevent the hairpin from slipping too easily out of your hands when trying to slide it around the hair.

Hairpins are often sold in cardboard packages. Some packages may contain only a few dozen forks, while others may contain a hundred forks. Supermarkets, pharmacies, and dollar stores usually carry at least the original small and simple version of the hairpin.
