What’s a forklift cage?

A forklift cage is a platform that allows a person to be lifted safely by a forklift. The cage is made of strong metal with walls or railings, and has a door or gate for entry and exit. The cage must be secured with chains and the worker should wear a safety harness. The construction must be strong to prevent crushing accidents, and the floor usually has texture for better traction.

A forklift cage is sometimes known as a work platform or man basket, as it allows a person to be safely lifted by the fork blades of a forklift to a height above the ground. The forklift cage is almost always made of very strong metal such as steel and has a flat floor with walls or railings on all sides of the platform. The rear of the cage often features a high back that protects the worker from the forklift’s lifting mechanisms, and the front of the cage features a door or gate that allows the worker to enter and exit safely.

To safely lift the forklift cage, an operator must correctly fit the cage to the fork blades. This is done by sliding the fork blades into the pockets on the bottom of the forklift cage. The blades slide into the pockets until the blade holder presses against the rear wall of the cage and the forklift cage itself is secured in place by chains. Once the forklift is in place and the chains are secured, the cage can be safely lifted. A worker can enter the cage and close the gate behind them, making sure it prevents falls or other types of accidents.

While the worker is in the cage, they usually wear a safety harness that can be attached to the cage walls of the forklift using a carabiner or hook. This will prevent accidents such as falls while the person is being lifted into the cage. The cage will also likely contain tool trays or other work surfaces, although many cages do not. Cage walls or railings are usually set at hip height, although the walls may be higher for added security. The bottom walls allow a worker to lean forward while working.

The forklift cage construction must be exceptionally strong to prevent crushing accidents. Durable metals are usually used to prevent the worker from being injured if the lift presses the cage too hard against a solid object. The floor of the cage usually has some sort of texture, in the form of adhesive strips or diamond plating, to allow for better traction while walking or otherwise moving around inside the cage. Open railings allow a worker to slide the carabiner along the length of the rail, which in turn allows for greater mobility.
