A forklift crane is a tool used to lift and move heavy objects. It consists of a forklift truck with a crane attachment that includes an arm, chain or rope, hook, and tackle. The crane allows for higher lifting and arc movement, but has limitations such as a short boom and angle restrictions.
A forklift crane, sometimes called a forklift-mounted crane, is a tool used to lift and maneuver heavy objects. Forklifts are motor vehicles that are usually used to lift heavy objects off the ground and move them to a new location. Adding a crane attachment to one of these vehicles allows you to lift objects from above and then move them into position. A crane attachment can also be attached to or removed from the forklift as needed.
The main component of a forklift is the truck itself. These are relatively compact vehicles that are usually only large enough for a single operator. They are frequently used indoors, in warehouses or shipping yards, and are constructed with a forked protrusion on the front that can slide under a pallet or crate and then lift it using hydraulics. Once a forklift has picked up an item, it can be driven to a new location where the item can be deposited.
The crane attachment is the other major part of a forklift crane. This accessory consists of an arm, a chain or rope, a hook and a tackle. The arm attaches to the forklift forks and extends from the vehicle several feet up a slope. The chain or rope runs the length of the arm and is run through one or more hoists, which are machines that decrease the force required to lift an object by increasing the amount of rope required to lift it. A hook at the end of the rope allows the crane to attach to a rope or chain tied around a crate so the crate can be lifted.
Once a crate is transported by a forklift crane, it can be moved to the correct position. The crane offers the advantage of being able to lift the crate higher off the ground than the forklift alone could have lifted it. It also allows you to move the crate in an arc around the forklift, by rotating the crane arm or rotating the forklift. Depending on the size and weight of the object being transported, the forklift may also be able to carry it through a warehouse while being lifted by crane.
There are some disadvantages to using a forklift crane over a standard crane. These devices usually need to remain at an angle of less than 40 degrees to the horizon. The boom usually also needs to be relatively short, because a long boom with a heavy crate at the end could cause the forklift to fall.
