Freelance chefs must manage their own business, including planning, scheduling, purchasing, accounting, and marketing. They often work alone, cooking meals for clients in their homes and building a client base. They may also work in restaurants, on yachts, or for catering companies, and must be professional and budget-conscious.

A freelance chef or personal chef does more than just cook in a client’s home. You usually run a business and have to consider planning, scheduling, purchasing, accounting and marketing. Though some people in this position have assistants to help with food preparation and other tasks but many freelancers work alone. Most cook meals a few times a month in a client’s home while stocking the client’s freezer with meals to last them until their next visit.

Freelance chefs can also work in restaurants like when the regular chef is on vacation. It can also work for clients on yachts or help prepare food for a catering company. Working in this position is usually not the same as a restaurateur. Caterers often prepare food for many different customers for parties and special occasions, instead of regularly preparing food for a handful of customers.

Building a client base can be one of the hardest parts of being a freelancer as a chef. Many industry experts recommend that new freelancers save up a year’s salary before starting because it may be difficult to earn enough money until you form a regular client base. A freelance chef must literally be able to cater to his customers’ tastes right from the start because a chef’s reputation is greatly influenced by customer referrals.

In addition to excellent cooking skills, a freelance chef must look and feel professional. Budget and price are also essential skills because the cost of ingredients and any other expenses come from her earnings. He or she must also make the prices of the meals affordable for the customer, but also make a useful profit after the costs for ingredients and other expenses have been deducted.
