A hoist is a lifting device that can be operated manually or with a motor. It uses a chain and hook system or other means of lifting to move heavy objects. Different designs are used for specific purposes, such as forklifts with boom arms to lift objects onto trucks or into engine bays.

A hoist is a device used to lift and move heavy objects by a chain and hook system or other means of lifting. The design of the hoist lift can vary significantly based on the intended purpose; in factories and warehouses, the elevator may include a chain that goes around a wheel, which is turned mechanically by a motorized unit. This unit can be moved along a high mounted track above the objects to be lifted, allowing the user to lift the object and move it to a different location.

This system requires a pulley that controls the cable or chain of the hoist lift. A motor usually powers the pulley, turning it in one direction or another, depending on whether an object needs to be lowered or raised. The cable or chain will wrap around the pulley as it spins, or it will unwind from the wheel. Once the chain or cable has been fully lifted, the hook at the end of the cable will prevent further movement of the pulley. Quite often the controls for such a unit dangle from a wire and a hand unit may be used by a standing operator to control the wire feed.

Not all host elevator designs have a motor. Some can instead be operated manually; cranks, for example, can be turned to feed or retract the cable, and some models feature a ratchet for safety. A come-along, for example, uses a hand lever that is pulled back and forth, and a ratchet system ensures that the cord doesn’t slip during operation.

Other elevator designs are meant for specific purposes. A forklift, for example, might have a boom that mounts to the bed of the truck or to the underbed frame. Heavy objects can then be lifted by a chain and hook system that mounts to the boom arm of the lift lift. The arm most often pivots or rotates, allowing the user to connect the chain and hook an object to the ground, then transfer that object to the truck bed by twisting or pivoting it in the bed. A similar design is often used to lift engines off vehicles or mount them in the engine bay upon installation. Such a boom hoist will have a solid base which is often mounted on wheels or casters.
