What’s a fridge truck?

Refrigerated trucks transport perishable goods using ice or on-board refrigeration systems. They are used to transport food and other items that require a constant temperature, such as medication and archaeological artifacts.

Refrigerated trucks are road vehicles used to transport goods considered perishable when subjected to higher temperatures. Trucks of this type use several different strategies to maintain a cool temperature in the cargo section of the truck, including the use of ice. A refrigerated truck is capable of transporting perishable items over long distances without the cargo deteriorating before reaching the designated destination.

There was a time when a refrigerated truck would use ice to keep the storage area cool. Often, solid blocks of ice would line the interior walls of the space, leaving the main section open for cold storage. Over time, the refrigeration truck began to use on-board refrigeration systems that work in a similar way to that used with home refrigerators. There are also some refrigerated truck designs that use carbon dioxide to reduce and maintain the desired temperature in the trailer space.

Refrigerated trucks are often used to transport perishable foods from the manufacturer’s facility to retail outlets that will in turn sell the foods to the general public. Often the foods are processed foods that need to be kept frozen to maintain freshness. Foods like raw meats, frozen entrees, and frozen dairy products like ice cream, sherbet, or frozen yogurt are transported to supermarkets using a refrigerated truck.

For short distances, the refrigerated truck may be a single unit built like a passenger van. Trucks of this type are capable of transporting small amounts of frozen items from one location to another, such as from a warehouse to a nearby supermarket. One of these smaller refrigerated trucks is ideal when the total delivery is quite small and there is no need to employ the larger semi-trailers that are used to transport large quantities of goods over longer distances.

In addition to food, a refrigerated truck can also be used to transport other goods that need to be kept at a constant temperature. Certain types of medications require temperatures that cannot be controlled in standard transportation vehicles. Organs for transplantation can also be shipped to a destination using refrigerated trucks. In some cases, valuable archaeological artifacts can be transported in trucks of this type, allowing both temperature and humidity to be controlled. This level of control allows recovered artifacts to prevent further deterioration while on their way to a research facility or museum.
