What’s a full-face helmet?

Full-face helmets are used by motorcyclists, cyclists, and skiers to protect the head and face during hazardous activities. They vary in design depending on the sport, with DOT-approved helmets required for motorcyclists. Off-road motorcyclists and bicyclists may wear helmets without built-in visors, with separate crash tests for bicycle helmets.

The full-face helmet is common among motorcyclists, cyclists, and skiers. It is a protective covering that covers the head and face, thus reducing the likelihood of injury or death while participating in hazardous activities. The full face helmet is usually made of a polycarbonate shell over styrene, and some helmets feature a visor made of Lexan or other shatterproof material. Depending on the sport you participate in, the features of the full face helmet may vary.

Full-face motorcycle helmets must be DOT-approved, which means they have passed crash tests and provide adequate protection in the event a rider falls or collides with a solid object. Motorcyclists riding on the highway will wear a different helmet than dirt bikes or other off-road vehicles. A full-face road helmet is usually lined with a soft foam liner and completely covers the mouth and chin. It features a visor that moves up or down depending on the rider’s preference. Many full face helmets of this variety feature tinted visors or UV protection as well.

An off-road motorcyclist will wear a different type of full face helmet that does not have a built-in visor. Most off-road motorcyclists wear goggles similar to ski goggles, so the front of the helmet will have an open-air design. However, it is still a full-face helmet that features an attachment that extends around the jaw and in front of the chin to prevent direct impact with solid objects. These helmets are typically lighter than full-face road helmets and allow for better ventilation and airflow.

Bicyclists may also wear a full face helmet similar to the off-road motorcyclist. However, while motorcycle helmets must be crash tested to gain DOT approval, bicycle helmets do not have to meet DOT criteria. There are separate crash tests for bicycle helmets, but since most bicycles don’t reach motorcycle speeds, the criteria are different. A bicycle helmet should not be worn while riding a motorcycle. A motorcycle helmet can be worn when riding a bike, but a rider may find a bike-specific helmet more suitable for him because it is much lighter.
