One of the most common uses of this pan is its namesake, the gem. A very simple form of bread, gems are made from very few ingredients. They can be used as an accompaniment to meals, desserts or snacks, depending on your favorite recipe. Gems can also be referred to as gem cakes.

To make a simple gem, whole wheat flour and water are mixed. The resulting soft bread will be elastic and fluffy. Some cooks prefer to use graham flour and salt can be added to flavor the bread. If a gem is not available, such a popover pan can be used.

Other spices and flavorings some chefs use include ginger, maple syrup, and brown sugar. Dried fruits and nuts can also be added. If making a sweeter gem, you may need other ingredients for baking, such as shortening, flour, eggs, and butter.

There are dozens of pans with gems of different shapes. Sunburst patterns can be used to create an elegant effect when serving small bites or hors d’oeuvres at a stylish event. Heart shaped cups are used for personal occasions, children’s parties and homemade sweet desserts. Rectangular motifs resembling small loaves of bread are also popular. The most common gem, however, is the standard cup shape.
