A doorman guards entry to buildings, providing extra security and assisting residents or guests. They may also act as a porter or usher. A bouncer is a type of doorman in bars and nightclubs focused on security. Tipping is customary in some cases.

A doorman guards the entry of doors and may work in apartment buildings, hotels, large commercial buildings or nightclubs. A term related to doorman is the word porter, the person responsible for guarding the door and allowing entry or denying it to people who wish to enter a building. The United States House of Representatives had an official goalkeeper until the office was abolished in 1995.

A doorman often provides extra security to a building and many people who live in large apartments like to have this little extra protection. While the doorman doesn’t necessarily act as a security guard, he can question the entry of people who shouldn’t be in a building. A good doorman in an apartment building not only opens the doors but gets to know the residents of the apartment and usually friends or family who often visit the residents.

When a goalkeeper is in regular employment, it is often customary to offer a seasonal tip to the goalkeeper. This can be done cooperatively or separately, depending on the size of the building. A tip of a dollar or two from friends and family at the point of service is also often customary.

In other cases, the doorman protecting a business doesn’t necessarily need a tip. Instead it is usually the first contact with someone entering a building and can provide information on where the person needs to go. Often, a doorman, help desk, or security personnel desk located near the entrance to the building replaced the doorman. At some businesses, access to the rest of the building may only be permitted if you have appointments or have a legitimate need to be there. In this sense, the doorman, security guard or help desk staff can keep a building safer by removing those who have no reason to be in a building.

A hotel doorman may also act as a porter, carrying luggage to rooms or assisting people from their cars to reception. Sometimes the hotel doorman just opens the hotel door, letting people in. In movie theaters, the word doorman is usually synonymous with an usher, a person who can guide people to their seats, or simply check tickets at the theater door to make sure the person has purchased a ticket to see the show. Ushers may also perform other responsibilities such as cleaning theaters, making sure no one is taping movies illegally, or occasionally asking rowdy guests to quiet down or leave the theater.

Another form of the goalkeeper occurs in the waving position. Instead of restricting access, the welcome user grants access by greeting customers as they enter a store. It’s common to find a concierge or doorman at auto lots and at stores like Wal-Mart.
A bouncer is a specific type of doorman, often employed in bars and nightclubs. The function of the bouncer is to admit people and to escort any unwanted guests out. The focus is on security and a safe environment for customers.
