A graphics tablet is an input device used by artists to draw on a computer screen with a pen or stylus. They come in various sizes and pressure sensitivity levels, and a good stylus should have function buttons. They are preferred over a mouse for their natural feel and can reduce repetitive stress injuries.

A graphics tablet is an input device used by artists to allow them to draw an image on a computer screen without having to use a mouse or keyboard. It consists of a flat, touch-sensitive pad and some sort of drawing device, usually a pen or stylus. Also known as a drawing tablet or graphics tablet, the tablet is best suited for artists and those who want the natural feel of a pen-like object to manipulate the cursor on the screen. The smooth flow of this input device can be refreshing for people who find the mouse too jerky, and repetitive stress injuries like carpal tunnel syndrome are less likely when using this tool.

A range of graphics tablet sizes are available, from the smaller 3 x 4 inch (7.6 x 10.2 cm) models to the larger 7 x 9 inch (17.8 x 22.9 cm) models. There are even larger models, up to the huge 14 x 14 cm (35.6 x 35.6 inch) tablets aimed at professional designers and architects. Size is the primary factor in determining the cost of a tablet, however, and a shopper should expect prices to rise dramatically at the high end of the size spectrum.

A good range of pressure sensitivity in a tablet’s drawing surface is also something buyers should look for. High pressure sensitivity, ideally at least 512 levels, allows the user to control a variety of aspects of a drawing, including line color and thickness, simply by pressing the stylus more or less heavily, mimicking drawing with a pen real.

The stylus included with a graphics tablet is also an important consideration for the consumer. Some are wired, while others are wire-free. Corded tablets don’t require batteries, but many people find that the cord severely limits their range of motion. A good stylus will also have function buttons on the side, so the user can perform common actions, such as changing a tool in a drawing program from drawing to erasing, without having to use the mouse or keyboard.
