What’s a Gravel Pit?

A gravel pit is an open mine used to extract materials near the earth’s surface, such as small rocks used for concrete or pavers. Miners remove topsoil and subsoil layers to reveal the gravel beneath, which is then washed and processed. Gravel pits can pose challenges for miners, such as water filling the pit, but abandoned pits can be rehabilitated as artificial lakes or nature preserves.

A gravel pit is a type of mine that is left exposed to the surface of the earth. While a great deal of mining is done deep underground, a gravel pit is used to extract materials located near the earth’s surface. These mines start out as relatively small holes or voids and grow larger and larger as mining is completed. Gravel pits may also be called rock quarries or open pit mines in some parts of the world.

Gravel is made up of small rocks that are used as aggregate in concrete or pavers. This material is also used to create a structural foundation for a roadway or to aid in soil drainage. Different types of gravel are also placed around planting beds to serve as decoration and as a form of weed control. A gravel pit that supplies this type of small stone will generally not include any type of larger slabs or stones. Some gravel pits, however, may include naturally occurring metals or minerals that can be mined along with the gravel.

To build a gravel pit, miners start by removing topsoil and subsoil layers from the earth, using large stripping machines. This reveals the layers of rock and gravel beneath the surface so these materials can easily be mined using front loaders and other large machines. Subsequently the gravel is subjected to washing and processing before being shipped to asphalt plants or other production plants.

While a gravel pit serves as a simple and effective method of extracting gravel from the earth, it also poses its own set of challenges for miners. As workers dig below the local water table, these wells gradually fill with water, which can make extraction difficult. In this type of situation, workers can dredge up the gravel from below and simply let the water fill the pit. Other times, miners rely on large pumps to temporarily remove the water and allow the mining process to continue.

Once all the gravel has been removed, these pits are often abandoned by the workers. Many communities have attempted to rehabilitate these wells by using them as artificial lakes. Gravel pits that have filled with water often serve as nature preserves or recreational areas, allowing users to take advantage of swimming and boating opportunities. Many communities introduce freshwater fish to these abandoned gravel pits so the area can serve local fishing enthusiasts. If the gravel pit is at a high elevation and doesn’t fill with water, mining companies or communities can install grass and trees on the site to help rehabilitate the land.
