What’s a hand compactor?

Hand compactors are machines used to compact materials or objects. They can be manual or motorized, such as a compactor used to compact soil or a vibratory plate compactor used to compact particulate matter. Rammers are the most basic design, while in recycling settings, hand compactors are used to crush materials.

The term “hand compactor” can refer to different types of machines used to compact materials or objects. A compactor, for example, is a type of hand compactor used to compact soil or other fine particulate material; it consists of a long metal or wooden handle, at the end of which is a heavy steel plate that can be pressed or slammed against the materials to compact them. Another type of hand compactor can be used to press asphalt into cracks or holes that may have been drilled for a specific purpose.

Other machines can also be considered manual compactors, even if motorized. A vibratory plate compactor, for example, may fall into this category because the user operates the machine via hand controls and steers the machine by manipulating a stationary handle. The vibratory plate compactor features a large flat steel plate that will vibrate at high speed to create dynamic compaction of particulate matter such as soil or even asphalt. The user will walk behind the machine as it compacts the soil to manipulate the machine’s direction and vibration speed.

Rammers are perhaps the most basic of all hand compactor designs. These simple tools have no motors; they achieve compaction using the force of the operator. The user will grasp the tool by its long vertical handle, lift the tool off the ground, then lower the tool into soil or other materials needing compaction. The large steel plate at the bottom of the handle provides a flat surface for compacting materials. This hand compactor is very useful for smaller projects; larger projects would take too long to make using this method, so plate compactors or even powered roller compactors can be used.

In recycling settings, the term hand compactor can refer to a machine used to crush various types of materials. Such machines will generally require the user to manually activate the crushing motion; this is often accomplished by using a metal arm that is cantilevered for leverage. The user will pull the arm once the materials have been loaded into the compaction chamber and the arm will activate a crushing mechanism which will crush the material into a compact form. Such compactors are usually used for smaller items or lower capacity jobs; they are also sometimes used in the home to facilitate easier laundering habits.
