What’s a hanger bolt?

Docking bolts are metal fasteners with threads on both ends, used to attach nuts and accessories to hard surfaces. Heavy-duty bolts are recommended for supporting heavier objects, and stainless steel or zinc plated bolts are suggested for outdoor use. Specialized bolts, such as anchor bolts and retaining bolts, are available for different mounting jobs and surfaces. Flush mounting techniques can hide the bolt and make the mounted item appear to float. The stability of the mount is only as secure as the weakest bolt.

A docking bolt is a cylindrical metal fastener threaded at both ends and often tapered at one end. Attachment bolts are driven into hard surfaces with drills and hammers so that one of the threaded ends sticks out. Nuts and other hanging accessories are attached to a hard surface by twisting them onto the exposed threads of the hanger bolt. Steel fastening bolts with a larger diameter and longer length have greater strength, which allows them to support the weight of heavier objects. Sheer strength is the ability of a component to resist force without breaking.

Set bolts designed to be driven in have a recess on one end into which a square or hex bit can be inserted. A hammer attachment bolt has a flat end for striking and a conical end for driving into the mounting surface. Driving a docking bolt too hard into the hard surface can make it impossible to secure the suspension hardware properly. A stud is more likely to pop out, bend or snap when less than half of its length is immersed in the hard surface. Stainless steel and zinc plated fixing bolts prevent rust and are commonly suggested for outdoor hanging applications.

Commercial and home craftsmen often choose a heavy duty bolt to connect two surfaces and completely hide the fastener. Once the bolt is driven into the wall, the other end disappears into the back of the hanging piece. This flush mounting technique makes the mounted item appear to float in place on the surface with no visible support. Some large objects require several suspension bolts driven at equal depths along their length to keep them from breaking off the hard surface and sliding down. The stability of the mount is as secure as the weakest bolt.

Specialized Fastener Bolts are made for a variety of mounting jobs and surfaces. Some custom designed lag bolts have anchoring systems that help hold them in place once installed. These anchor bolts are commonly driven into thinner, less sturdy materials such as drywall and wood to increase the stability of the mount. The spring loaded retaining bolts open once inside the mounting surface to make it even more difficult to extract them. It can be difficult to remove some types of studs without causing noticeable damage to the mounting surface.
