What’s a hardness test?

Hardness tests evaluate a material’s resistance to bending, scratching, abrasion, or cutting and can be conducted in various ways depending on the material. The Mohs scale is used in geology to evaluate scratch resistance, while the Rockwell and Vickers tests provide specific numerical data. The scleroscope test measures hardness in terms of elasticity. Converting results from one test to another is unlikely to be accurate, and the best test method depends on the material being tested.

There are some material properties that are precisely defined. Hardness is not one of them. A hardness test can evaluate several things, such as a material’s resistance to bending, scratching, abrasion, or cutting. These tests can be conducted in many ways. Test methods generally depend on the type of material being tested, such as a mineral, metal or rubber.

Geology is a field where a hardness test can refer to an evaluation of scratch resistance. It is common for geologists to use hard objects to try and scrape away rocks and minerals with an unknown hardness. There is a scale, known as the Mohs scale, which ranges from one to ten. Softer materials are rated at the lower end of the scale and harder items at the higher end.

A hardness test using the Mohs scale is considered a relative test. This is because the information obtained on one material is related to that of another. Relative tests are often insufficient as they do not provide much individual information.

The Rockwell hardness test is considered more accurate. This test also deals with scratching, but focuses more on indenting than confirming whether one object can scratch another. This test is more complex and uses different degrees of pressure. Since there are several measurable factors, this test provides specific numerical data.

The Vickers hardness test also takes care of the indentation. Numerical data can also be obtained from this test. First, a diamond penetrator is used to mar the surface of an object. Then, the force is divided by the indentation area to produce the result.
A test that measures hardness in terms of its elasticity is known as a scleroscope hardness test. The results of this test are based on hardness units. The test is performed by dropping a diamond tipped hammer onto the test material. The hammer should recover to some extent. This rebound determines the hardness.

Some people try to convert results from one test to another or compare them. This can be done in some cases, but the results are unlikely to be accurate. This is because the factors surrounding each test can be so different, making it very difficult to accurately convert one set of numerical terms into another.
The decision of which test method is best is often based on the material being tested. Each method can have advantages and disadvantages. In some cases, it may be necessary to conduct more than one type of test on a single item.
