What’s a Hobo Stove?

A hobo stove is a small, portable stove made from a paint can or similar container with holes drilled for airflow. It can burn almost any type of fuel and is useful for outdoor cooking, camping, and survival situations.

A hobo stove gets its name from the fact that it is small, easily portable, and typically made of junk. This handy little stove is used for outdoor cooking and works well for boiling water and cooking small, light meals. One of the most common ways to make a hobo stove is to drill a few holes in an old paint can. The inside of the can is used to hold the fire and the top is where the kettle or pan is placed.

To build a hobo stove, an empty 1-gallon (about 4 liters) can of paint or something similar in size, such as a large coffee can, is used. The can doesn’t need to be a certain size, but if it’s too small there won’t be enough room for the fuel in the can. A few holes are drilled through the front of the can near the bottom. A few more holes are made in the back of the can, near the top. This arrangement creates a draft, providing adequate airflow for the fire inside.

Small twigs work well as a fuel source for a hobo stove. In some cases the fire can overheat, but this can be controlled by blocking a few air holes in the front of the canister to limit the amount of oxygen reaching the flames. The user can also gently blow through these holes when starting a fire to give them some help getting started.

There are many variations in hobo stove design. Most of these stoves are made for backpacking or general camping, because they are small and light. They’re especially useful because they can burn almost any type of fuel that can be salvaged, so you don’t need to carry propane or other special items to have a small fire. Because the stove contains the fire instead of sitting atop a larger bed of coals, it’s also safer to use in areas where an open campfire could be dangerous due to very dry conditions.

In addition to its use as a camp stove, a tramp stove can have benefits in a survival situation. It can be used not only to heat food, but also works well to purify water by boiling it. In the event of natural disasters like earthquakes, hurricanes, and tornadoes, a tramp stove, along with a few waterproof matches, can literally save your life.
