The purpose of this is typically to create blast holes to blast rocks that need to be cleared from a large area, but there can be many reasons for drilling holes through dense materials.

For science, a hollow drill rod can be used to extract sample material from the ground for study. The drill is dug into the ground or ice, for example, and when it’s mined, a scientist can save the sample for study. This is mostly used when studying the effects of an area over time, as the sample will represent how the dirt composition has changed, perhaps even over millions of years.
