What’s a hook screw?

Studs, also known as bolts, are headless screws used to attach table and chair legs to soft materials like wood. They come in various sizes and designs depending on the application and require a special key for installation. Hook screws are available at hardware stores and can be used for various purposes where the hardware connecting two items need not be visible.

You may have wondered how table and chair legs magically stay attached to the table, usually with no visible signs of hardware. In fact, it’s not magic at all that holds them in place, but rather a simple device called a stud, or sometimes a bolt.
A stud is a headless screw. It is designed to be driven into wood or other soft material. There are wood screw threads on one end, which is pointed, and machine threads on the other. The two threads may meet in the middle, or there may be an unthreaded shaft in the middle.

The hanger screws are available in various thread sizes, such as 1 cm (4 inch) or 64 cm (5/16 inch). The length of the thread can vary from 79 cm (1-1/2 inches) to 3.8 cm (3 inches). Installation generally requires the use of a special key.
The type of hanger screw you will need will depend on the application. Table and chair legs, for example, need to be securely attached to the table and would require a fully threaded screw, so you don’t see any gaps. Such designs would require a larger and thicker hanger screw, to support the weight of a table or, in the case of the chair, the weight of an adult.

Hook screws are usually available at your local home improvement or hardware store. In addition to table and chair legs, they are used for a variety of other purposes. They can be used to build railings, to attach chair armrests to chair bases, or to attach armrests to car doors. Any other application where the hardware connecting two items need not be visible is definitely a candidate for a stud.

The next time you visit your local hardware or home improvement store, check out the hardware aisle and take note of the wide variety of screws available there. If you’re feeling really adventurous, unscrew a leg from the kitchen chair and watch a hook screw in action. Of course, make sure you return it safely, or someone in the family could end up stranded!
