A hook wrench is a hand tool with a flat handle and a hook that can be fixed or hinged to fit various sized parts. It is used to tighten, loosen, or hold round, notched, or faceted machinery components. Hook spanners are made of durable materials and come in different sizes and weights. They are commonly used in plumbing, sanitation, and heating systems, as well as for adjusting bearings.

A hook wrench, also known in Britain as a hook wrench or C wrench, is a hand tool consisting of a flat handle ending in a hook. The hook can be fixed or it can be hinged to allow the wrench head to fit various sized parts. A hook wrench is used to tighten, loosen or hold machinery components that are round but also notched or faceted, such as locknuts and pipe fittings. Thanks to the fact that it comes in a range of different sizes and often has an adjustable head, it is a highly flexible tool that can be used to adjust parts of different circumferences.

In most cases, hook spanners are made of highly durable chromium or carbon, stainless, or tool steel. Their handles can be covered with a rubber or plastic sleeve to improve grip and user comfort. Commonly available models range in length from approximately 4 inches (10.16 cm) up to 13 inches (33.02 cm). Depending on the size of the individual model, a hook wrench is capable of adjusting components as small as 0.6 inch (1.52 cm) in diameter and as large as 8 inches (20.32 cm). It can range in weight from about 0.05 lb (22.68 g) up to about 3 lb (1.36 kg).

Whether the head of a hook wrench, or hook, is fixed in place or adjustable, the inside of its curve usually ends in a small, downward-facing tooth or claw. When the wrench is placed around the part it is being used to manipulate, this tooth fits into the notch in the part, as with a crimped locknut, or grips on one of its facets, as with a beveled pipe fitting. When the key is turned, the prong prevents the head from slipping out of place, allowing the user to adjust the part quickly and efficiently.

The hook wrench is commonly used to build and repair machinery that incorporates pipes or other round parts joined together by nuts, retaining rings or other joints. This type of configuration is often found in plumbing and sanitation systems, as well as dairy, refrigeration, and heating systems. Hook spanners are also useful for adjusting bearings, commonly found in products and machinery with moving parts. These tools are widely available on the Internet and from hardware and home improvement stores as well as industrial suppliers.
