House parties can refer to long weekend events or college-aged parties, but in business, they are a way to introduce guests to products for sale. Hosts can be sellers or representatives, and parties are marketed towards women with various products available. It’s not necessary to attend or reciprocate invitations.
A house or house party has several definitions. We can think of these parties as long weekend parties, where guests stay several nights in the house. Other definition of house party is when usually college-aged youth hold a large party at someone’s house, as distinguished from holding a party in a dorm room. These definitions have little to do with the house party in business and especially in direct sales. Instead, in business, the house party is a means of introducing guests to the products they want to buy.
There are several ways to organize a party at home. A person hosting the party may be the seller of goods and may be a representative of a specific direct selling company. This person invites friends and acquaintances to the house party to try or explore the different merchandise on offer, usually from a company. In direct sales, the seller may have purchased the merchandise at cost and may sell it at a profit, although this is not always the case. These parts are usually marketed to women, with a variety of products available. This can include cosmetics such as Avon or Mary Kay, household products such as Tupperware, and a variety of other things such as food, kitchen supplies, home and garden decor items, children’s clothing and toys.
Sometimes the person organizing the party is not the sales rep. Instead, a representative can convince a friend to host the house party. There may be some advantage to this scenario for a few reasons. Someone who doesn’t sell the products seems to endorse them by throwing a party. The host may also have greater knowledge than the seller, which increases the rep’s potential clientele. Another advantage is that the sales rep can focus on presenting the merchandise and doesn’t have to take the time to organize a party.
House parties are often fun social events where women look forward to hearing a sales presentation or viewing products they might find useful. If you’ve been invited to such a party, it might be wise to bring your checkbook with you. It’s also okay not to attend these parties, as they are sales events where someone will try to sell you something. Being invited to a house party focused on selling merchandise is not the same as being invited to someone’s house. You are not expected to socially reciprocate, although if you are, expect the sales rep to ask you to become a rep and/or throw her a party.
