What’s a humane mouse trap?

Humane mousetraps catch mice without killing them, allowing for their release away from human habitation. The Smart Mousetrap by Greenfeet is recommended by PETA. However, mice may not survive when released and traps should be checked frequently.

Many people who have mice in their home would like to get rid of these pests. Mice can carry disease and humans are better off in homes free of mice, excluding house mice. It may seem cruel to trap mice in ways that kill them, and there are many alternatives to getting rid of mice without causing their instant death. One idea is the humane mousetrap.

A humane mousetrap or live mousetrap catches mice in a way that doesn’t kill them. This is usually accomplished by means of some sort of cage that has an entrance but no exit. Sometimes the entrance has special weight sensitivities that close a door once a rat has entered. Not all live mousetraps are perfect, and some can accidentally close entry doors on mice if they’re small enough. Usually, though, a humane mousetrap works well for catching mice, which can then be released away from human habitation.

You’ll find many varieties of humane mousetraps available online and in places like hardware stores. Some of these are suitable for catching a single mouse and others can be used to catch multiple mice. The latter may be a better choice if you have a significant mice infestation in your home. Many of these types of humane mouse traps are easy to clean and reuse so you don’t have to dispose of the trap once you move your mouse or mice.

A humane mousetrap recommended by the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) organization is the Smart Mousetrap, manufactured by the Greenfeet® company. This is an inexpensive trap that looks more like a plastic hamster or rat cage. It has many air holes so the mice don’t suffocate and you can definitely tell you’ve caught a mouse through the clear plastic cover. There are a variety of other mouse traps available, but not all of them let you tell if you’ve actually trapped a mouse.

Some live rat traps aren’t truly humane. Some brands have glue paper inside the trap, which will cause the mouse to stick to the paper. You can’t free mice stuck like this and most people either allow these mice to starve or kill them. When you use these traps without glue paper, mice can be caught safely and released into the wild.

Even though a humane mousetrap is supposed to be better for the mouse, there are some problems with the trap-and-release theory. First, it’s definitely not human if you don’t quickly release the mouse. Mice can starve and die if deprived of food, which can be a terrible and painful death. Do not use these traps if you will not be home to check them frequently. Additionally, some mice are not very well adapted to living away from human habitation and may not survive or be able to compete well for food when released.
