A hyperextension bench is exercise equipment that works the lower back, abdominals, and hamstrings. It has padded supports to secure the lower body and a large pad for the athlete to lie on. The athlete uses their lower back muscles to lift their upper body off the floor. The intensity of the workout can be increased by adding dumbbells or changing the position of the legs.
A hyper extension bench is a piece of exercise equipment that allows an athlete to work the muscles of the lower back. It also provides some benefits for the abdominal muscles and hamstrings. There are several types of hyperextension benches, but they all work in roughly the same way. They use some system of padded supports to secure the lower body, so an athlete must use their lower back muscles to pull their upper body out of a bent position.
A typical hyper extension bench will have some type of large pad that the athlete lies on with their face toward the floor. This pad is large enough to provide support to the lower hips and groin, and is usually only a few feet off the floor. A padded bar aligns with the athlete’s leg just below the knee. Further back is a third pad which, when the athlete is positioned correctly on the hyper extension bench, will rest against the athlete’s Achilles tendons. Underneath the hip pad, there is usually also a set of handles that the athlete can use to get on and off the hyper extension bench more easily.
When an athlete is sitting correctly on the hyper extension bench, the padded parts will lock the lower body in an immobile position. It is important for the athlete to ensure that all pads align correctly with the athlete’s body to avoid putting pressure on weaker parts of the body, such as the knee. Once in the correct position, the athlete folds the arms across the chest and bends at the waist to lower the chest toward the floor. From this position, he or she uses the muscles of the lower back to lift the upper body off the floor and should continue to do so throughout the full range of motion of the back. The athlete can lower his torso to its original position and repeat the exercise.
It is very easy for an athlete to increase the intensity of workouts on a hyper extension bench. An athlete can increase the resistance of the exercise simply by hugging a few dumbbells to their chest while using the bench. Also, there are variations of hyper extension benches that will change the position of the legs. They will always stay locked in place, but changing the height of the feet in relation to the hips will change the influence the athlete has when performing the exercise. This, in turn, affects the intensity of training.
