What’s a Jack Post?

A jack post is a steel post used to support a structure, typically placed under a beam in a basement or ground floor. It is adjusted using a threaded rod or pin and hole system and must be placed on a cement or concrete floor. Lifting the building slightly before placing the post is advisable, and a steel plate should be placed under the jack post for pressure distribution. To blend in with the surroundings, builders may frame posts with a square wood frame and paint or wallpaper them.

A jack post is a steel post used to support a structure. This post is placed under a beam typically in a basement or ground floor. It is adjusted to a snug fit, thus preventing the beam from sagging in the structure.

Adjustment is by a threaded rod attached to a steel plate until the correct height is achieved to allow the jack post to fit securely under the beam. Some versions of this post use a pin and hole system to adjust the post. It must be placed on a cement or concrete floor in order to support the weight of the structure without sinking into the floor.

When a post is placed under a structure, it is often a good practice to lift the building slightly before placing the post. This is accomplished by placing a wooden beam or short section of steel post on top of a large screw jack and rotating the jack until the floor has been slightly raised. The post is then placed under the support beam and adjusted for a perfect fit. When the jack is removed, the jack post takes over the job of holding the structure and preventing any snags.

It is also advisable to place a steel plate under the jack post to allow for pressure distribution from the structure outward and away from the circumference of the post. This will also prevent the post from breaking through the floor it is resting on. Most of the top plates of these jacks have a provision for nailing them in place under a wooden beam or for pinning them in place if the support beam is a steel I-beam. This prevents the jack from slipping out of position over time.

Since jack piles are typically placed in an open expanse of basement in an unsupported building, they can be an eyesore if the basement is ever finished or remodeled to be a living space. Most builders will frame posts with a square wood frame that blends easily into its surroundings by painting or wallpapering in the same material as the walls. This gives the impression that the jack is an integral part of the structure. In some new construction, jacks are placed at the time of construction due to the unparalleled level of support they provide.
