What’s a Jib Hoist?

A jib hoist, also known as a jib crane, uses a boom and pulley system to lift and move heavy objects. It features a pulley system with wire ropes, chains, or belts, and is commonly used for industrial and domestic applications. The hoist has a vertical beam for stability, a horizontal arm for load distribution, and a motor to retract the cable. Smaller versions are used on pickup trucks, while larger ones are seen in factories, warehouses, and construction sites.

A jib hoist is more commonly known as a jib crane and uses a boom and pulley system to lift and move heavy objects. The boom, also known as a jib, can vary in size based on the weight of objects most commonly lifted by the system. The jib hoist features a pulley system which in most cases is done with wire ropes, although sometimes chains or belts may also be used, depending on the size and function of the unit. These lifting devices are commonly used for industrial applications and in some cases for domestic use as well.

A vertical beam is attached to its base to provide stability for the jib lift system. A horizontal beam, or jib, is attached to the vertical beam; sometimes it is welded, while in other cases it can be bolted or even hinged. This arm will help distribute the load of the object being lifted and will also allow for movement of the object under the arm lift system. A pulley is usually attached to the end of the horizontal arm and a cable is threaded through this pulley and wrapped around it numerous times. The other end of the cable is attached to the vertical beam or even to the ground behind the jib hoist.

Once the line has been wrapped around the pulley numerous times, the line will fall off the jib to the ground. A hook or other fastening system is attached to the end of the cable and is attached to the object to be lifted. Once the element is secured, a motor mounted on the top pulley of the jib hoist will activate and the cable will retract as the pulley rotates. To help distribute the lifted load even more, one or more additional sheaves can be attached to the length of cable just above the item itself. The weight that can be distributed will depend on how many pulleys are placed in the system.

Smaller versions of these hoists are sometimes mounted on the flatbeds of pickup trucks. They can be used to lift heavy items into the truck bed and are popular with motorcycle owners and businesses that regularly deliver exceptionally heavy items to customers. Larger jib hoists can be seen in factories, warehouses, or even construction sites, as these locations are likely to require routine lifting and moving of heavy materials.
