What’s a ladder rung?

Ladders come in different styles and rungs can vary depending on the ladder’s function and construction. Fixed ladders have equally spaced rungs, while stepladders have flat rungs for support. Rope ladders are lightweight and portable but not as useful in many situations.

A rung of a ladder is a rung on a ladder. When most people think of the word scale, a very specific image comes to mind, most likely a standard scale, known as a fixed scale. This type consists of two long pieces of wood, metal or plastic on each side connected by a series of pegs, which may be of the same or a different material. There are, however, many different styles of ladders, some of which are designed for more specific purposes and some which are multi-purpose. The rungs of these ladders can also be unique in many different ways, mostly depending on the function and construction of the ladder.

A fixed ladder can be made of wood or light metal, with each individual rung made of the same material. The pegs are spaced an equal distance apart, and are typically anywhere from 10 inches (25.4 cm) to 12 inches (30.5 cm), but can be more or less. However, ladders with rungs spaced 12 inches apart are generally not built in lengths divisible by 12, so the distance from the top and bottom rungs to the ends of the ladder will usually be different from each other and will be shorter than the spaces between each peg.

The shape of a ladder rung varies from ladder to ladder. A cylinder is a common rung shape found on many ladders, both metal and wooden. Due to its roundness, however, it can be difficult to stand in one place without proper shoes, so the function of rungs with circular or ovular cross-sections is mainly to climb up and down. Circular metal pegs are often covered in a grainy sandpaper-like finish for a better grip while standing on them.

Stepladders, or folding ladders, are most popular for use when someone wants to stand in one place. These are designed with zippers at the top and two or sometimes even three folding sides. A ladder rung on at least one side of a stepladder is usually designed with a flat top several inches (cm) long for better support for a person standing on any rung. These rungs are flat so it’s just as easy for someone to do the necessary work while standing anywhere on the ladder, and the rungs can be finished with non-slip material to help prevent accidents.

A rung on a ladder doesn’t even need to be stiff. This is true in the case of rope ladders, which are designed to be lightweight, portable and easily stored. Due to their construction, these ladders are often kept near windows in case of an emergency. Their fragility however does not make them very useful in many situations where rigid ladders are typically used, as descending a step on a rope ladder may require some dexterity.
