Freight elevators on trucks raise the bed for quick unloading, using hydraulic arms with struts and pistons. A freight elevator is a mechanism fitted to some types of trucks that allows the bed of that truck to be raised; this in turn allows you to quickly download the content of the read, or “download”. The mechanism is usually controlled by hydraulic arms mounted in such a way that the solid metal arms of the unloading hoist can scissor lift, thus pushing one end of the caisson skyward. Hydraulic arms consist of two parts: struts and pistons. The rods are filled with hydraulic fluid, usually some type of oil, and the pistons are mounted inside the rods. As the risers are pressurized, the pistons push outward, expanding the hoist.
Dump trucks most commonly use a dump lift system. These trucks feature large capacity flatbeds with hinged gates that allow material to fall freely when the dump lifter is activated. The top of the box is usually open, allowing other heavy machinery to load materials into the box for transport. Many haulers are equipped with some sort of cover system that prevents material from flying out of the bed during transport. The lift is housed under the floor, and is generally hidden from view when the floor is in its normal transport position.
The dump truck driver can usually operate the dump truck lift using controls mounted in the truck cab or on the side of the truck. Controls mounted on the side of the truck tend to be more convenient because the operator will be able to see where the material is being unloaded, while operating the unit from the truck cab can obscure the operator’s view. Many trucks have controls in both positions to make it possible to unload from various positions.
Sometimes a dump truck lift is designed for use with a standard pickup truck rather than a specially designed dump truck. These units mount under the factory bed, which will need to be removed for proper hoist installation. These hoists tend to be smaller and lower capacity than dump truck hoists, but in some cases they are perfect for full-sized or even mid-sized pickup trucks. The hoist arms are steel, just like the larger models, and the hydraulic arms will take care of lifting and supporting the load. However, some smaller hoists may only feature one hydraulic arm, while most larger models have two or more.
